Chevrolet is the mass market division of General Motors and has a wide range of models in its line including vans, sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, coupes, convertibles and pickup trucks.

Chevrolet was founded in 1911. William Durant left General Motors and partnered with racing driver, Louis Chevrolet, to start up the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. The five passenger Classic Six sedan was the first model produced by Chevrolet. It was unveiled in 1912 as a fast paced automobile that could reach a speed sixty-five miles per hour. In 1914 Chevrolet introduced the Durant.

Over the next four years Durant was able to buy enough stock in General Motors to take over control of the company. With that Chevrolet was made a division of GM and by the middle of the 20s was outselling all of the other divisions.

During the next decade Chevrolet brought out its independent front suspension. This system offered a a much smoother riding experience. An expanding line of affordable sedans, coupes and pickup trucks was developed through the 40s. By the 1950s Chevrolet had incorporated power brakes and steering, air conditioning, power windows and a V8 engine to its designs. At the same time the popular Bel Air and Corvette were introduced. The Bel Air came out in a sedan, coupe, wagon and convertible body and the Corvette with a fiberglass frame.

The compact Corvair with its air cooling technology, was launched in the 1960s. Not much later, the Nova, Chevelle, Camaro and Mustang were also introduced. The economic losses of the 1970s forced Chevrolet to rethink its brand line, and bring out much more compact and fuel efficient automobiles. By the end of the 1980s Chevrolet was rolling out its top selling trucks and SUVs.

With the onset of the millennium, Chevrolet increased the performance and power capabilities of its automobiles, offering the Z06 and the ZR1, the Impala SS, the Silverado, and the Tahoe Suburban.

Today Chevrolet continues to make substantial improvements to its automobiles, introducing hybrid versions that provide car buyers with a more environmentally acceptable form of transportation. With these new innovations, the auto manufacturer has proven its ability to maintain its popularity and success in the global market.
